Snail mail saviours keep licensed post office open in outback town

The local licensed post office, an essential service for this town of approximately 610 residents, faced closure when the previous owners retired without finding a buyer after several years. This would have been a devastating blow, leaving residents with a two-hour round trip to the nearest alternative in St. George.

Ten years ago I would have said you were crazy if you'd think I was going to be living out here.

However, the community refused to let this vital hub disappear. Jane Steiger, a local who already manages the school bus run, stepped up to take on the post office license. With only two months to prepare, she underwent rigorous postal training alongside a small group of dedicated locals. Together, they have successfully reopened the post office, operating it out of the Dirranbandi Rural Transaction Centre (RTC), which already serves as a one-stop shop for various government services, including Centrelink, a library, and a university study hub.

Montana Lambert, who is also working at the newly reopened post office, expressed her gratitude: "I feel pretty lucky that we've been given the opportunity to help our community."
