Socceroos player allegedly tests positive for cocaine after speeding stops

Socceroos World Cup player Cristian Volpato is facing allegations of testing positive for cocaine after being stopped by police for speeding on two separate occasions in Sydney on the same night. The 22-year-old Australian midfielder was first pulled over on the Anzac Bridge at 11:05 PM local time on Thursday.

Police reported that Volpato was traveling between 86-94 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. While a roadside breath test returned a negative result, he was stopped again approximately two hours later for traveling at 109 km/h in the same restricted zone. It was during this second stop that Volpato allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine.

New South Wales state police have issued Volpato an infringement notice for excessive speed. His international driver's license has been suspended for six months, prohibiting him from driving in New South Wales. Police stated that their inquiries are ongoing, and a secondary oral fluid sample has been collected for further analysis. Volpato represented Australia in three World Cup matches before their elimination in the round of 32. He currently plays for Serie A club Sassuolo.
