Social diversity in Geneva: building coexistence requires addressing tensions

Geneva is striving to build social diversity across its territory, a goal enshrined in law since 2017. The aim is to foster the cohabitation of varied socio-economic profiles, generations, associations, and businesses within the same neighborhoods. This approach is designed as a defense against urban segregation.

However, the implementation of this social mixing policy is not without its challenges. Tensions have emerged among residents as different groups navigate shared spaces. The La Forêt neighborhood, near Servette, provides a clear example of these emerging conflicts.

In this newly greened communal space, residents from subsidized housing, condominium owners, seniors from a medicalized building, a kiosk operator, and nursery employees coexist. Despite the picturesque setting, conflicts over the use of these common areas have quickly surfaced. Seniors have clashed with children over noise, drawing criticism from parents. Educators on break have been told to smoke elsewhere, highlighting friction points.

These incidents reveal the complexities of creating truly integrated communities. While the intention is to prevent segregation, the reality on the ground involves managing the daily frictions that arise when diverse populations share limited resources and spaces. The success of Geneva's social diversity goals hinges on finding effective ways to mediate these user conflicts.
