Society overlooks women’s sacrifices, Mary Njoku reflects on women’s struggles

Nollywood actress and media entrepreneur Mary Njoku has voiced criticism against society's tendency to disregard the sacrifices and accomplishments of women. She argues that many women carry immense responsibilities without receiving adequate recognition for their efforts.

Njoku recounted a personal experience with a male colleague who complained about the pressures of providing for others, building a business, and supporting dependents. When Njoku expressed understanding, the colleague dismissed her, stating that women could not relate to such burdens. Njoku responded by signing his check and walking away, reflecting that "Reality doesn’t need defending. Sometimes, your life speaks louder than your words."

Reflecting on the experiences of many African women, Njoku noted that countless women have financially and emotionally supported their families for years, often without acknowledgment. She highlighted how women have historically helped raise siblings, paid school fees, supported parents, and cared for relatives, sometimes continuing these roles even after marriage and starting their own families.

Njoku encouraged women to acknowledge the value of their efforts and celebrate their successes. She emphasized that their work matters, their sacrifices count, and their success is their own, requiring no external permission.
