Soekarno-Hatta airport closure extended again, now until 5:30 p.m.

The closure of Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport was extended for a fourth time on Sunday, with the new estimated reopening set for 5:30 p.m. local time.

The airport had initially been scheduled to reopen at 5:30 a.m., but the closure was later extended to 9:30 a.m., then 1:30 p.m. The latest extension took effect at 1:23 p.m. under a new Notice to Airmen issued by AirNav Indonesia.

AirNav said volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau had spread through the airspace and posed a danger to aviation. The agency said it would continue monitoring the ash and airspace conditions, update aeronautical information as conditions changed, and coordinate with aviation stakeholders to deliver timely information about navigation services and airspace safety.

At Terminal 3, CNN Indonesia observed cleaning staff removing volcanic ash visible on the floor outside the terminal. Inside, passengers waited for confirmation of flights affected by the temporary closure.

Passenger Wulan Sari said she arrived at the airport at about 4 a.m. for a 6:50 a.m. flight to Singapore. The airline later told her that the flight had been canceled because of the situation.
