Sokcho Revitalizes Seorak-dong Tourism with 'Seorak Hyanggi-ro' Attraction

Sokcho City's Seorak Hyanggi-ro has emerged as a major tourist draw, attracting over 500,000 visitors in the 20 months since its inauguration. This scenic route, stretching 2.7 kilometers and incorporating a 765-meter skywalk and a 98-meter suspension bridge, has significantly boosted the tourism sector in the Seorak-dong area, which had previously experienced a decline.

The success of Seorak Hyanggi-ro is attributed to its blend of natural beauty and modern attractions. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Seorak Mountains while strolling along the path. The addition of landscape lighting during the evenings has proven to be a key element in enhancing the visitor experience, extending their stay and transforming Seorak-dong from a mere transit point into a destination in its own right.

Sokcho City is not resting on its laurels. The municipality is actively pursuing further enhancements to the tourist infrastructure. Plans include developing resting areas on underutilized land and continuing to expand night-time lighting to strengthen the area's appeal after dark. Additionally, efforts are underway to improve the connectivity and convenience of tourist routes linking to Seorak Hyanggi-ro.

A significant project nearing completion is the remodeling of the Seorak Mountain Cultural Facilities (formerly the Red Ginseng Experience Center). This initiative aims to convert the aging structure into a multi-purpose cultural complex. External renovations are expected to be finished by June, with internal work concluding in the first half of next year, followed by its grand opening. These combined efforts are poised to reposition Seorak-dong as a comprehensive tourist destination offering a mix of natural scenery, cultural experiences, and relaxation. As Acting Mayor Bae Sang-yo stated, the 500,000 visitor milestone is proof of Seorak-dong's potential for a tourism resurgence, and the city remains committed to its development as a preferred destination for extended stays.
