Sokoto bandit attacks displace thousands, says NEMA

Thousands of residents have been displaced in Sokoto State following recent bandit attacks in the Tureta Local Government Area, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported. An assessment by NEMA's Sokoto Operations Office revealed the extent of the displacement after attacks on June 7 and 9 in the Dan Gulbi community.

Findings from the assessment revealed that the recurring attacks have displaced thousands of residents, forcing them to flee their homes in search of safety.

NEMA officials observed widespread displacement, with many residents fleeing their homes to seek safety in public facilities and neighboring settlements. Thousands are currently sheltering at JNI Primary School and Abdulbaki Model Primary School in Tureta town. Some have also relocated to Tsamiya Ward, Duma Ward, and neighboring communities within Tureta, while others have moved to Gummi Local Government Area in Zamfara State.

The recurring violence has led to loss of lives, with reports of additional casualties from an attack on the Achi Asha Ruwa community. The attacks also resulted in the looting and destruction of several shops and means of livelihood, exacerbating the humanitarian situation. Some individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries.

NEMA is collaborating with stakeholders and security agencies to determine the full impact and support humanitarian interventions for the affected populations.
