Sokoto Hisbah bans DJs, mixed-gender entertainment, extravagant gifts at weddings

The Sokoto State Hisbah Board has implemented an immediate ban on several wedding and social gathering practices deemed un-Islamic innovations. The directive, announced by Commander Malam Usman Abdullahi Jatau, targets activities such as the use of DJs, mixed-gender entertainment, and extravagant bridal gifts, commonly known as 'lefe'. The board also prohibited Wazigidi music, loudspeakers on tricycles, women sitting beside tricycle riders, indecent hairstyles, and excessive spending on gifts.

We declare that these innovations (bid’ah), which are contrary to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), have negative consequences for any marriage conducted in such a manner because it departs from the teachings of the Prophet.

Jatau stated that these measures are essential for safeguarding the state's religious and moral values according to Islamic teachings. He specifically called out the popular marriage introduction ceremony, 'Na Gani In So,' where grooms present numerous gifts to the bride's family, as lacking basis in Islamic tradition. He warned that such practices have negative consequences for marriages by departing from the Prophet Muhammad's teachings.

We call on the families of both the bride and groom, as well as parents, to fear Allah and desist from these practices.

The Hisbah commander urged intending couples, parents, and families to embrace simplicity in wedding ceremonies and avoid imposing unnecessary financial burdens. He issued a final warning to those engaged in or patronizing the banned activities, emphasizing that sanctions will be applied. The board aims to reduce marriage costs and prevent young families from falling into debt due to lavish ceremonies.

This is our final warning to everyone, especially those engaged in these activities and those who patronise them. They should fear Allah and stop before sanctions are taken against them.
