Solar eclipse on August 12: INM plans exceptional setup

Tunisia is preparing for a partial solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, with the National Meteorology Institute (INM) announcing the establishment of public observation stations across the country. The celestial event will be visible from 6:30 PM until sunset.

The INM has designated several locations for public viewing, ensuring accessibility for residents in various regions. These include the meteorological station in Kef for the first region, the beach of Sidi El Jemi in Soliman (governorate of Nabeul) in partnership with the Tunisian Astronomical Society for the second region, and the meteorological stations in Kairouan and Tozeur for the third and fourth regions, respectively.

For the fifth region, observation will take place at Sidi Jmour on the island of Djerba in the governorate of Médenine. These sites have been chosen to provide optimal viewing conditions for the public to witness this rare astronomical phenomenon.

In parallel, the Cité des Sciences à Tunis has issued a strong warning regarding visual safety. It is strictly advised not to look at the sun with the naked eye without adequate protection. Failure to comply could result in severe and irreversible eye damage. The institution emphasized the necessity of using certified eclipse glasses or optical instruments equipped with appropriate solar filters to ensure safe viewing.
