Soldier Dies in Accidental Shooting During Military Operation in Colombia's Cauca Region

A tragic incident has occurred in the municipality of Guachené, located in Colombia's northern Cauca department, where a soldier from the National Army lost his life. The soldier, identified as Kevin Júnior Alaércio Balanta, 24, was fatally wounded by a gunshot during ongoing military operations in the region.

The incident took place in the San José village, approximately 15 minutes from Guachené's urban center. According to initial official reports, the military patrol was en route to the urban area when, for reasons still under investigation, a weapon discharged accidentally. The shot struck Balanta, his comrade in arms.

Following the shooting, fellow soldiers immediately provided first aid and transported the wounded soldier to the municipal hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Balanta succumbed to his injuries, which were located in the right inguinal region. The event has prompted immediate action from the military.

The National Army has activated its internal protocols and launched judicial and disciplinary investigations to clarify the exact circumstances of the shooting and ascertain any potential responsibilities. The military expressed its condolences to Balanta's family and reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out control operations and supporting civilian populations.
