Soldiers intercept gun runners, rescue six kidnap victims in Zamfara

Troops operating under Operation FANSAN YAMMA in Zamfara State have successfully intercepted three suspected gun runners and rescued six kidnapped victims during separate operations conducted on Sunday, August 23, 2026. These operations underscore the ongoing efforts to combat criminal elements in the North-West region of Nigeria.

The weapons cache was destined for Yar-Galadima in Maru Local Government Area.

In one operation, troops from Sector 2 intercepted a vehicle along the Kaura Namoda–Shinkafi Road, uncovering a concealed AK-103-2 rifle, one magazine, and 30 rounds of ammunition. Preliminary investigations suggest the weapons cache was destined for Yar-Galadima in Maru Local Government Area. The suspects and recovered items are now in military custody for further investigation.

In a separate incident, troops responded to a distress call concerning an attack on motorists along the Anka–Gummi Road. The soldiers engaged terrorists who were attempting to force their captives into a nearby forest. The pressure from the troops forced the attackers to flee, abandoning all six victims.

The rescued individuals were immediately secured by the troops.

Three of the rescued individuals sustained minor injuries and were evacuated to a medical facility, where they are reported to be in stable condition. The Joint Task Force reiterated its commitment to disrupting the supply of arms to terrorist groups and ensuring the safety of communities and road users. They urged the public to remain vigilant and provide timely, credible information to security agencies.
