Soldiers kill terrorist lieutenant and recover machine guns in Katsina

Nigerian troops killed a suspected terrorist lieutenant and seized weapons and motorcycles during clearance operations in Katsina State, according to the Joint Task Force North West.

The operation took place on August 29, 2026, as troops from Sector 2 advanced into identified terrorist enclaves in Matazu Local Government Area. Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the task force’s media information officer, said the troops faced strong resistance from armed terrorists.

During exploitation of the area, troops confirmed the neutralisation of a terrorist identified as Smally, a lieutenant of notorious terrorist leader Kachalla Muhammadu Filani.

Danja said the troops responded with superior firepower, forcing the fighters to flee. During a search of the area, troops identified one of those killed as Smally, described as a lieutenant of the notorious terrorist leader Kachalla Muhammadu Filani.

Troops also recovered six motorcycles used by the terrorists for their nefarious activities.

The military said the recovered equipment included three machine guns, two AK-47 rifles, 11 magazines, 180 rounds of ammunition and six motorcycles. It described the motorcycles as having been used by the terrorists in their activities.

The operation is part of Operation FANSAN YAMMA’s continuing offensive across its Joint Operations Area. Danja said the troops remained focused on restricting the terrorists’ freedom of movement and creating conditions for lasting peace and security in affected communities.
