Soldiers suspected of causing forest fire in Cyprus

Cypriot Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas has ordered an investigation into a fire caused by National Guard engineers who allegedly ignored regulations while firing decommissioned munitions. The incident occurred at the Kalo Chorio firing range on the country's southern coast during a period of high fire risk.

Palmas expressed "deep dissatisfaction and strong indignation" that the engineering battalion destroyed six anti-tank missiles. He emphasized that air temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius, making such explosions prohibited during the summer months. "You understand that I will act with all the severity that such circumstances require," the minister told reporters.

Around 100 firefighters, supported by eight aircraft, worked to bring the fire under control. The blaze consumed 120 hectares of vegetation, prompting the precautionary evacuation of two small villages. Fortunately, no damage was reported to homes or other property. The investigation aims to determine the exact cause and prevent future occurrences.
