The match, held at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, ended 1-1 in regular time. LAFC ultimately prevailed 5-4 in the penalty shootout, earning crucial points in the group stage of the regional club competition.

Son, a key player for the Major League Soccer side, will look to break his scoring drought in the upcoming matches. LAFC's schedule includes two more group stage games, both at home: against Toluca on August 9th and against Queretaro on August 13th.

The Leagues Cup, established in 2019, features 36 teams from both the U.S. MLS and Mexico's Liga MX. The tournament format includes a group stage where each team plays three other teams from the opposing league, with penalty shootouts used to decide drawn matches in regular time.
