South Africa strengthens maritime security to drive Blue Economy growth

South Africa is bolstering its maritime security and ocean-based industries to unlock the full potential of its Blue Economy, a strategic move aimed at creating jobs, boosting trade, and safeguarding vital marine resources. The country faces significant challenges, including piracy, trafficking, and illegal fishing, which authorities are tackling by integrating maritime security with economic development initiatives.

To enhance trade resilience and strengthen its global shipping position, South Africa is modernizing port infrastructure and expanding ship-repair facilities in key hubs like Durban and Cape Town. The government is also channeling investments into Operation Phakisa, marine aquaculture, and fish processing projects. These initiatives are designed to generate employment in coastal communities, improve food security, and stimulate overall economic growth.

South Africa has got huge and wonderful natural resources, which we need to exploit to a higher level… we can grow our economy enormously and make South Africa a hub as far as the ocean economy is concerned.

Furthermore, South Africa is expanding its network of Marine Protected Areas. This effort aims to replenish fish stocks, conserve marine biodiversity, and support sustainable coastal tourism. Regionally, the nation collaborates with neighboring countries under the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Integrated Maritime Security Strategy, conducting joint patrols and coordinating actions against piracy, trafficking, and other maritime offenses.

Former Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Willie Aucamp emphasized South Africa's commitment to scientific cooperation, joint marine research, sustainable financing, capacity building, and intensified action against illegal fishing. He stressed the importance of guiding emerging marine industries with sound scientific research. President Cyril Ramaphosa has also underscored the strategic value of the maritime sector, viewing the country's extensive ocean resources as a crucial driver for economic expansion and job creation. He stated that South Africa's ocean economy could significantly grow the nation's economy and establish it as a major hub.
