South Africa World Cup midfielder Jayden Adams dies at 25

South African football is mourning the loss of Jayden Adams, a 25-year-old midfielder who passed away just weeks after representing his country at the FIFA World Cup. His death was confirmed by Gayton McKenzie, South Africa's minister of sport, arts and culture, who expressed profound shock and sorrow.

It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at the age of 25.

"South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters," McKenzie stated. The minister did not disclose the cause of death, appealing for restraint and compassion from the media and public to avoid speculation. Western Cape police have opened an investigation after a 25-year-old man's body was found in Schotschekloof, Cape Town, on Saturday morning.

Adams was a significant figure for both the national team, Bafana Bafana, and his club, Mamelodi Sundowns. He played in all three of South Africa's group-stage matches at the World Cup, contributing to their historic achievement of reaching the knockout stage for the first time. FIFA president Gianni Infantino conveyed his sadness, extending condolences from the global football community to Adams' family and teammates.

The cause of Jayden's passing has not yet been confirmed.

Born in Cape Town, Adams rose through the Stellenbosch FC academy before moving to Mamelodi Sundowns. He amassed 139 appearances for Stellenbosch, helping them win the Carling Knockout in 2023. At Sundowns, he added a Premiership title and a CAF Champions League crown to his honors. His passing comes less than a month after the death of his grandmother.
