South African Le Clos loses home in fatal fire

South African swimmer Chad le Clos has lost his Cape Town apartment in a devastating fire that occurred on July 30, the same evening he achieved a historic milestone in his athletic career. The blaze also claimed the life of one of his neighbors.

Le Clos, who recently became the most decorated athlete in Commonwealth Games history with his 21st medal, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram. He described how the fire started in his apartment block and quickly spread to his home, leaving nothing salvageable. "It has taken me a while to process this heartbreaking tragedy," he posted.

The swimmer also paid tribute to his neighbor who died in the incident, extending his condolences to the victim's family and friends. The Chad le Clos Foundation has initiated a fundraising campaign to support residents affected by the fire.

Le Clos's recent Commonwealth Games success includes a bronze medal in the men's 4x100 meters medley relay, which propelled him past Australian Emma McKeon in the all-time medal standings. His tally now stands at seven gold, five silver, and nine bronze medals across five Games. His career highlights also include winning gold in the 200m butterfly at the 2012 London Olympics, famously beating Michael Phelps.
