South Korea court gives ex-President Yoon suspended jail term for violating election law

A South Korean court has sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to 18 months in prison, suspended for three years, for violating election law. The conviction is based on false statements he made during his 2022 presidential campaign, specifically denying introductions to a former tax official and downplaying his relationship with a shaman.

The Seoul Central District Court accepted the prosecution's argument that Yoon's denials were false and that he had indeed introduced the lawyer to the official and maintained contact with the shaman, whom he met through his wife, former first lady Kim Keon Hee. The court emphasized the significant impact such false statements by a candidate can have on voter decision-making, especially when made during public events like debates and interviews.

Prosecutors had sought a two-year prison term, arguing that Yoon's statements helped deflect scrutiny during the election. Yoon, who has denied any wrongdoing, plans to appeal the verdict. His legal counsel stated his intention to challenge the ruling.

The conviction carries significant financial implications. Under South Korean election law, parties are reimbursed for campaign expenses if their presidential candidate wins or secures at least 15% of the vote. However, if a candidate later receives a sentence that invalidates the election, such as a jail term or a substantial fine, the party must return these funds. In Yoon's case, his People Power Party could be required to repay approximately 39.7 billion won (US$27.1 million) if the sentence is finalized.
