South Korea Cracks Down on 'New Tolls' as Parking Fees Soar at River Valleys

South Korea's Gyeonggi Province is launching an emergency crackdown on what it calls a "new form of toll" after illegal riverside structures were removed. Vacationers are now facing exorbitant parking fees in some areas, prompting provincial authorities to act.

Previously, the province had cleared out illegal platforms and tents that occupied riverbanks. However, with the peak summer vacation season, new schemes have emerged to charge excessive fees. Reports indicate that in Paju and Gapyeong, local residents are charging up to 30,000 won for parking, regardless of how long a vehicle is parked. This practice exploits the scarcity of public parking facilities in scenic riverside locations.

In response, Gyeonggi Province has initiated an urgent, province-wide survey of parking fees near rivers. Governor Lee Jae-myung has directed the investigation to ensure fair pricing and prevent undue burdens on visitors. The provincial government aims to establish reasonable "standard parking fee guidelines" and will actively guide local municipalities on their implementation.

Furthermore, the province is taking a firm stance against private parking operators suspected of illegal activities. Authorities will thoroughly inspect for violations of laws such as the Parking Lot Act, River Act, and others. The Gyeonggi Provincial Special Judicial Police will be involved in a strict investigation and enforcement against any confirmed illegal operations. A dedicated reporting channel for citizens to voice complaints about inconvenience and illegal practices is also being established to ensure swift action.
