South Korea Eyes 1 Trillion Won Water Project Exemption for Semiconductor Hub

South Korea's government is moving to fast-track a crucial 1 trillion won water infrastructure project designed to support the semiconductor industry in the southwestern region. The plan involves exempting the project from preliminary feasibility studies, a move intended to expedite the development of a stable water supply.

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment announced that the exemption proposal is slated for review and potential approval by the cabinet as early as this month. This strategic decision underscores the government's commitment to bolstering the nation's semiconductor capabilities by ensuring essential resources are readily available for industrial complexes.

The project encompasses several key components, including raising the Dongbok Dam by 15 meters, constructing water transmission pipelines, and establishing wastewater recycling facilities at the Gwangju No. 1 sewage treatment plant. These measures are critical for meeting the significant water demands of semiconductor manufacturing.

By bypassing the standard preliminary feasibility study, the government aims to accelerate the project's timeline, recognizing the urgency in securing water resources for the planned semiconductor industrial clusters. This initiative is part of a broader national strategy to solidify South Korea's position as a global leader in semiconductor technology.
