South Korea Faces Extreme Heatwave with Temperatures Nearing 39°C

South Korea is bracing for a severe heatwave, with daytime high temperatures forecast to soar to 39 degrees Celsius in some regions. Heatwave warnings have been issued for most of the country, and many areas are expected to experience tropical nights, where nighttime temperatures remain above 25 degrees Celsius.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has issued a "Extreme Heat Danger" warning for parts of Jeonnam and Gyeongbuk, urging residents to take extreme precautions to protect their health. The KMA has provided guidelines for action, including suspending or postponing outdoor activities and work, seeking cool places like shaded areas or cooling centers, staying hydrated, resting, and checking on vulnerable individuals like the elderly.

While light showers are expected in some inland areas of southern Gangwon and northern Chungbuk from late afternoon into the evening, the KMA stated that these are unlikely to offer substantial relief from the heat. Temperatures may temporarily decrease during the showers, but with high humidity levels, they are expected to rise again after the rain stops, maintaining oppressive conditions.

The weather pattern is influenced by the North Pacific High, leading to partly cloudy skies in central regions and generally clear conditions in southern areas and Jeju Island. Morning low temperatures will range from 23 to 27 degrees Celsius, while daytime highs will be between 32 and 39 degrees Celsius, significantly higher than the seasonal average. Fine dust levels are expected to remain at "good" to "normal" levels across all regions.
