South Korea faces intense heatwave, Daegu to reach 37C

Much of South Korea is bracing for continued intense heat, with the weather agency forecasting daytime high temperatures to reach 37 degrees Celsius in Daegu on June 25.

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicts national daytime highs ranging from 29 to 37 degrees Celsius. Cities like Seoul will see highs of 32 degrees, while Gwangju could reach 35 degrees. The southern region, particularly the southeastern coastal area of Gyeonggi Province, is under an extreme heat warning, with perceived temperatures potentially exceeding 38 degrees Celsius, a level considered life-threatening.

"For the time being, temperatures will be similar to or slightly higher than the average (lows of 21-24 degrees, highs of 28-32 degrees), but daytime temperatures in the southern regions will be higher than average," the agency stated. "In particular, the southeastern coastal area of Gyeonggi Province (Gyeongju) is expected to experience extreme heat with a maximum perceived temperature of 38 degrees Celsius (or a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius), and an extreme heat warning is in effect."

Despite the heat, some areas are expected to receive rain. The agency forecasts precipitation in parts of the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province on June 25, and in central regions and Gyeongbuk Province on June 26. Expected rainfall amounts vary by region, with some areas in northern Gyeonggi Province potentially receiving 20 to 60 millimeters.
