South Korea indicts First Lady Kim Keon-hee over residence relocation perks

South Korea's special prosecutor has indicted First Lady Kim Keon-hee and ruling party lawmaker Yoon Han-hong in connection with alleged preferential treatment during the relocation of the presidential residence. The second comprehensive special prosecutor's team, led by prosecutor Kwon Chang-young, announced the indictments on June 18.

Kim is accused of abusing her authority in April 2022. Prosecutors allege she directed officials involved in preparing the residence construction to discuss a loan of construction business licenses with the CEO of 21gram, a company that lacked the necessary qualifications. She is also accused of facilitating a direct contract with 21gram.

Furthermore, Kim faces charges of receiving approximately 6.88 million won worth of Dior clothing, belts, and bracelets from 21gram between May and July 2022. She is also accused of having Chanel payments totaling 3.24 million won made on behalf of the company, allegedly as payment for securing the construction contract during the residence relocation.

This is the fourth indictment against Kim Keon-hee. A previous special prosecutor, Min Jung-ki, had already indicted her three times on charges including bribery and solicitation. The ongoing investigations continue to scrutinize the presidential residence's renovation and relocation process.
