South Korea Investigates Election Commission Over Misuse of Funds for Overseas Trips

South Korean authorities have launched an investigation into the National Election Commission (NEC) concerning allegations of embezzlement and misuse of funds related to overseas trips. The probe is focusing on questionable travel by NEC officials and the spouse of former NEC Chairman Noh Tae-ak.

The joint investigation team announced on August 20 that it is conducting searches and seizures at the NEC headquarters. The investigation is linked to complaints filed over alleged embezzlement and "junket" trips taken by NEC employees, as well as Noh Tae-ak's overseas travel with his spouse during his tenure.

Noh Tae-ak is currently under investigation for alleged violations of the Public Official Election Act and dereliction of duty in connection with the ballot shortage incident during the June 3 local elections. Additionally, suspicions have arisen regarding his overseas trips, during which his spouse accompanied him, yet the NEC reportedly did not disclose this in official reports, leading to accusations of disguised personal travel.

Further allegations involve NEC employees' trips to destinations like the Maldives and Florence, which are suspected to have been for leisure rather than official business. The People Power Party filed a complaint accusing the NEC of embezzlement in relation to these trips.

The joint investigation team was initially formed on July 11 to investigate the ballot shortage during the local elections. Subsequent searches and seizures at seven locations, including the NEC, identified Noh Tae-ak and others as suspects. The investigation has since broadened to encompass allegations of irregularities in NEC hiring practices and the aforementioned overseas travel scandals.
