South Korea men's basketball team suffers heavy defeat to Lebanon, falls to bottom of World Cup qualifiers

South Korea's aspirations for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup are in jeopardy following a decisive 74-93 loss to Lebanon. The defeat, which occurred on February 28th (KST) at the Nuhad Nawfal Sports Complex in Zouk Mikael, Lebanon, has relegated the South Korean men's national team to the bottom of Group F in the second round of Asian qualifiers.

Under the guidance of head coach Nikolaos Maroulis, South Korea initially showed promise, leading 24-18 after the first quarter and maintaining a narrow 41-38 advantage at halftime. However, the team's performance unraveled in the second half. Lebanon outscored South Korea 30-14 in the final quarter, capitalizing on a significant disparity in three-point shooting accuracy. South Korea converted only 22.9% of its three-point attempts, while Lebanon shot an impressive 39.1% from beyond the arc.

Key player Lee Hyun-jung, who joined the team after completing his NBA G League mini-camp, contributed 11 points and 5 rebounds in nearly 31 minutes of play. However, his 28.6% success rate from three-point range was a point of concern. Other notable performances included Lee Jung-hyun with 13 points and 3 assists, and Yeo Jun-seok with 19 points and 4 rebounds. The team now faces a crucial home game against Saudi Arabia on March 2nd, needing a victory to improve their standing in the group.
