South Korea men's volleyball team tops group, advances to East Asian Championship semifinals

The South Korean men's national volleyball team has advanced to the semifinals of the 2026 East Asian Championship, securing the top spot in Group B with a decisive 3-0 victory over Macau.

Under the guidance of coach Isanae Ramirez, the Korean team dominated Macau with set scores of 25-18, 25-16, and 25-15. This win marks their third consecutive triumph in the group stage, following earlier victories against Japan (3-1) and Taiwan (3-2). The team's strong performance has also led to an improvement in their International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) world ranking, moving up one spot to 25th, while Macau dropped to 120th from 119th.

South Korea showcased a superior performance throughout the match against Macau. Their powerful serves proved particularly effective, resulting in an impressive 8 service aces compared to Macau's none. The team also held an advantage in blocking, with 6 successful blocks to Macau's 3.

Several players delivered strong offensive performances, with Kim Yo-han and Im Jae-young leading the team with 13 points each. Middle blocker Kim Jun-woo contributed 10 points, including two blocks, and Lee Sang-hyun added 9 points to the team's total.

This tournament serves as a crucial preparatory event for the upcoming Asian Men's Championship in Fukuoka, Japan, next month, and the Asian Games in Aichi and Nagoya. The Asian Championship offers direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics for the winner, and a spot in the 2027 FIVB World Cup for the top three finishers.
