South Korea opens applications for 2027 college entrance exam

South Korea is set to begin accepting applications for the 2027 College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), a crucial standardized exam for university admissions. The official application period runs from June 24 to July 4, during which prospective test-takers can submit their applications at designated education support offices and high schools across the country.

To ease the process, the Ministry of Education has introduced an online pre-registration system, available from June 20 to July 3. This system allows applicants to input their information and pay the application fee in advance, reducing potential congestion on the final application days. However, applicants using the online system must still complete the process by visiting an application center for identity verification to finalize their registration.

Applicants can apply in person at designated centers without using the online pre-registration. Those requiring special accommodations, such as students with long-term hospitalizations or those serving in the military, must submit supporting documents in person. Direct application by the test-taker is the norm, though proxy applications are permitted under specific circumstances, including for immediate family members of hospitalized patients, military personnel, or individuals residing abroad with official approval.

The application fee ranges from 37,000 won to 47,000 won, depending on the number of subjects selected. Fee waivers are available for individuals who qualify as recipients of basic livelihood security, are in the legal upper-income bracket, or are beneficiaries of single-parent family support, provided they submit the necessary documentation. The CSAT is a high-stakes examination, and the application process is designed to be accessible while maintaining necessary verification procedures.
