South Korea passes bill to extend special prosecutor's investigation period

The South Korean National Assembly has passed a bill to extend the investigative period for a second special prosecutor, aimed at probing remaining allegations following initial investigations into events like the January 11th coup attempt, the Kim Keon-hee case, and the Marine Corps' Chae Sang-byeong incident.

The amendment to the 'Act on the Appointment of Special Prosecutors for the Investigation of Truth and Reconciliation Regarding Sedition, Foreign Exchange, and State Affairs by Yoon Seok-yeol and Kim Keon-hee' was approved on July 21st. The bill passed with unanimous support, receiving 173 'yes' votes out of 173 present.

The revised legislation extends the investigative period for the comprehensive special prosecutor. It allows for two additional 30-day extensions, each requiring presidential approval, potentially granting up to 60 more days for the investigation, compared to the current single 30-day extension.

This development followed a filibuster initiated by the People Power Party (PPP) when the bill was first brought to the floor the previous day. The filibuster, a tactic of prolonged debate to obstruct legislative progress, was ended on July 21st at approximately 2:15 PM. The Democratic Party (DP) filed a motion to terminate the filibuster, which requires the support of three-fifths of the total number of assembly members. Following the termination, the DP and other progressive opposition parties pushed the bill through.

The passage of the bill signifies a continued push by the opposition to investigate matters they deem unresolved, while the PPP's attempt to block it highlights the deep political divisions surrounding these investigations.
