South Korea recovers record $94 million in improperly claimed government funds

South Korea has set a new record by recovering 129.6 billion won (approximately $94 million) in improperly claimed government funds in the past year. The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission announced the results of its investigation into the implementation of the public finance recovery system across 311 institutions. The recovered amount represents a 24% increase from the previous year, with penalty surcharges also rising by 74%. The commission highlighted that this marks the largest amount recovered to date.

The largest share of the recovered funds, totaling 29 billion won, came from livelihood benefits. This was followed by support funds in the industrial, small and medium-sized enterprise, and energy sectors, with 22.9 billion won recovered, and housing benefits, with 10.3 billion won recovered. The fastest-growing category for recovery was eco-friendly vehicle subsidies, which saw a 412% increase, recovering 3.2 billion won compared to 600 million won the previous year. The commission attributed this surge to the growing number of electric and cargo vehicles and enhanced oversight by relevant authorities.

In terms of penalty surcharges, the youth job creation support fund saw the largest imposition, with approximately 8.5 billion won levied, an increase of 1.4 billion won from the previous year. The clean workplace creation support fund followed with 7.9 billion won in surcharges. Lee Myung-soon, vice chairman of the commission, emphasized that improper claims of public funds severely undermine social fairness. He pledged to strengthen the system, encourage reporting, and rigorously manage public finances to ensure transparency.
