South Korea's defense industry is not just a matter of national security; it's a powerful engine for economic growth, as evidenced by a recent report from the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET).

The defense industry is an industry where advanced technologies such as machinery, electronics, materials, and ICT are concentrated, creating high forward and backward industry linkage effects.

The report highlights that last year's defense export orders, totaling $15.44 billion (approximately 22.27 trillion won), have a substantial ripple effect on the domestic economy. The estimated 46 trillion won in production inducement and over 100,000 jobs created underscore the industry's vital role. This surge in exports, marked by increased large-scale contracts and diversification of markets and products, has pushed South Korea's global arms export share to a record 6.0%, ranking fourth worldwide, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

The KIET report emphasizes the defense industry's nature as a high-tech sector, integrating advanced technologies from machinery and electronics to materials and ICT. This integration creates significant forward and backward linkages with other industries, generating substantial added value. The high proportion of research and development roles (25%) and permanent positions (92%) within the defense sector also points to the creation of high-quality jobs, a stark contrast to some other manufacturing sectors.

While the economic benefits are clear, the report also touches upon potential challenges. Increasing demands for local production and technology transfer from major buyers like Poland could potentially dilute the economic impact within South Korea. To maximize these benefits, the report suggests focusing on high-value-added products, further diversifying export markets, and strengthening the overall defense industry ecosystem. From a South Korean perspective, this industry represents a strategic convergence of technological advancement, economic prosperity, and national pride, showcasing the nation's capabilities on the global stage.
