South Korea’s Democratic Party Cancels Committee Hearing After Supreme Court Chief’s Father Dies

South Korea’s Democratic Party canceled a scheduled meeting of the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee after the father of Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae died.

The party had planned to summon Cho as a witness on Aug. 31 and question him about the written recommendation process for Supreme Court justice candidates. Seo Young-kyo, the committee chair from the Democratic Party, announced that the hearing would not take place and offered condolences to Cho and his family.

The full Legislation and Judiciary Committee meeting scheduled today for current issues concerning the Supreme Court will not be held due to the death of the father of Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae.

Seo said the committee’s budget and settlement subcommittee would meet at 10 a.m. the following day. A full committee meeting was also planned for 4 p.m., after the National Assembly opening ceremony, to vote on matters reviewed by the subcommittee.

She added that the committee could also elect its party whips and the chair of its first bill-review subcommittee if possible.
