South Korea's Gyeonggi Province Launches Second Independent Film Investment Project

Gyeonggi Province is cultivating a new model for supporting independent cinema by allowing residents to become investors through its "fragmented investment" program. The second film to benefit from this initiative is 'Truman's Love,' which recently began its pre-funding phase. This project aims to raise 10 million won, with individual investments starting as low as 100,000 won, offering citizens a direct stake in the creation and success of independent films.

The program, established last year, seeks to address the persistent challenges of funding and distribution faced by independent filmmakers. By enabling community participation, Gyeonggi Province hopes to build a more sustainable ecosystem where audiences are not just viewers but active stakeholders. The success of the first project, director Ha Myung-mi's 'Hanran,' which surpassed its funding target by 175%, has validated the potential of this approach.

'Truman's Love,' directed by Kim Deok-jung, known for his three consecutive invitations to the Busan International Film Festival, is described as a film exploring modern relationships and love. Its premise, reminiscent of 'The Truman Show,' centers on a protagonist who discovers their reality is constructed. The film has already secured 400 million won in production funding from the Korean Film Council.

Beyond funding, Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Content Agency provide comprehensive support, including legal advice, assistance with administrative procedures for fundraising, and help with distribution and theatrical release. This holistic support system aims to ensure that promising independent films can be produced and reach a wider audience, fostering a vibrant independent film scene.
