South Korea's Incheon Airport named world's busiest international hub

South Korea's Incheon Airport has achieved the status of the world's busiest international passenger hub in the first half of 2026, a remarkable feat achieved just 25 years after its inauguration. The airport processed 38.39 million international passengers, overtaking long-standing leaders like London Heathrow and Singapore Changi.

This ascent marks a significant milestone for Incheon, which has steadily climbed the rankings from 10th place in 2002 to third in 2024. Its success is attributed not only to its own operational momentum and continuous expansion, with four phases completed by November 2024, but also to shifting global dynamics. The conflict between the US and Iran, for instance, diverted transfer traffic through Middle Eastern hubs to Incheon, boosting its transfer passenger numbers by 18.1 percent.

Inbound tourism has also played a crucial role, with a notable increase in visitors from China and Japan. Foreign passengers constituted a record high of 44.4 percent of Incheon's total passenger traffic in the second quarter. The airport's expanded capacity, now able to handle 106 million annual international passengers, positions it as the world's third-largest in terms of capacity, connecting 183 cities across 53 countries through 101 carriers.

Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) highlighted the airport's 12th consecutive year as the top airport for service quality, further solidifying its position as a premier global hub. The corporation, led by acting President Kim Beom-ho, expressed gratitude for government support and public encouragement, vowing to maintain focus on core operations while expanding regional connectivity to bolster South Korea's aviation industry.
