South Korea's tech industry veteran Han Seong Sook nominated for prime minister

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has nominated Han Seong Sook, the former CEO of tech giant Naver, as the country's next prime minister. This move highlights the administration's strong emphasis on technology and innovation. The current prime minister, Kim Min-Seok, is stepping down to run for leadership of the ruling Democratic Party.

Han Seong Sook, currently the minister of small and medium-sized enterprises, is a prominent figure in South Korea's tech industry. Before entering government, she led Naver, the nation's largest online portal, and built a career in the internet and technology sectors. Her extensive experience in technology is seen as a key factor in her nomination for the second-highest executive position.

Presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik stated that Han is the right person to lead the country through significant technological transformations. "She is capable of leading the epochal transition to artificial intelligence and guiding the country's economic growth," Kang said, emphasizing her vast industry background. If confirmed by the National Assembly, Han would become only the second woman to hold the prime minister's office in South Korea, following Han Myeong-sook, who served from 2006 to 2007. A parliamentary confirmation hearing is being prepared.
