South Korea sends first container ship to Europe via Arctic

A South Korean container ship has embarked on a pioneering commercial voyage to Europe via the Arctic's Northern Sea Route, a move aimed at testing the route's economic feasibility. The vessel, 'PanStar Acro,' departed from Busan Port on Saturday, marking a significant step in South Korea's ambition to leverage Arctic shipping.

The trial voyage is particularly relevant as global maritime transport faces disruptions due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. By utilizing the Northern Sea Route, South Korea hopes to find a more efficient and potentially safer alternative for trade.

The 'PanStar Acro,' with a capacity of 2,758 TEUs, is carrying a cargo of 837 TEUs, including automotive parts and chemical products. The ship will navigate along Russia's eastern coast, cross the Bering Sea, and traverse the Northern Sea Route, with planned stops in Felixstowe, UK, Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Gdansk, Poland. The entire journey is projected to take between 40 and 45 days.

This initiative aligns with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung's priority to develop Arctic maritime transport. The government aims to transform the southeastern port of Busan into a global maritime hub and establish the Arctic as a regular trade route by 2030. The successful completion of this voyage could pave the way for increased Arctic shipping activity.
