South Korea to boost coastal ferry services for summer holidays

South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is enhancing coastal ferry services for the summer vacation period, aiming to provide safe and convenient travel for an estimated 855,000 passengers. The special transportation plan, running from July 25 to August 10, includes adding seven reserve vessels and increasing ferry trips by 13,507. This measure addresses the anticipated surge in demand as people travel to islands during their summer holidays.

Safety remains a priority, with 140 coastal ferries undergoing joint inspections by relevant agencies. Out of 425 identified areas needing improvement, such as equipment replacement or repairs, 418 have been addressed. The remaining seven issues are scheduled for resolution before the special transportation period begins.

To further improve passenger convenience, the Korea Maritime Transport Association has introduced simplified payment options like Kakao Pay and an AI chatbot on its ferry reservation website. Additionally, the Korea Maritime Safety Agency will provide real-time traffic information, including ferry departure/arrival times and next-day sailing schedules, on its website.

Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Woo-yeo expressed his commitment to ensuring a safe and pleasant experience for travelers. "This summer, the cool sea and our beautiful islands will offer special rest and memories to our citizens," he stated. "We will strive to ensure that our citizens can use coastal ferries with peace of mind and convenience during this summer vacation season."
