South Korea warns travelers of infectious disease risks in 10 popular vacation countries

As the summer vacation season kicks into high gear, South Korea's disease control authorities are urging travelers to be aware of infectious disease risks in popular destinations. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) has released a comprehensive guide detailing potential health threats in 10 countries that attract the majority of Korean tourists.

These top destinations, which include Japan, Vietnam, the United States, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Malaysia, account for approximately 71.1% of all overseas trips by South Koreans. The agency has categorized these locations based on their specific infectious disease profiles, offering tailored advice to mitigate risks.

It is important for overseas travelers to check the infectious disease information for their destination before traveling during the summer vacation season when overseas travel is rapidly increasing.

Travelers heading to Southeast Asian nations like Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia face a dual threat of mosquito-borne illnesses, such as dengue fever, and measles, which is highly contagious. The Philippines is also flagged as a cholera quarantine zone, necessitating caution with water and seafood consumption. Singapore and Taiwan are identified as areas requiring vigilance against mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and Zika.

Complete necessary vaccinations, stay informed, protect themselves from mosquitoes, and maintain personal hygiene.

Further afield, the United States presents risks of measles and mosquito-borne diseases, with some regions also warning of avian influenza and plague. The KDCA emphasizes the importance of pre-travel vaccinations, particularly for measles, at least two weeks before departure. They also stress consistent use of mosquito repellent, wearing protective clothing, and practicing safe food and water hygiene throughout the trip.

He urged travelers to complete necessary vaccinations, stay informed, protect themselves from mosquitoes, and maintain personal hygiene. Those entering Korea after visiting or transiting through designated quarantine areas are also asked to report their health status via the Q-CODE system.
