South Korean daughter sentenced to 10 years for murdering her mother

A woman in her 50s has received a 10-year prison sentence for the assault and murder of her elderly mother, who lived alone in Busan. The appellate court confirmed the original sentence, dismissing both the prosecution's and the defendant's appeals.

The defendant, identified as Ms. A, was accused of killing her mother, Ms. B (80s), on July 7 of last year. The prosecution alleged that Ms. A strangled her mother and repeatedly struck her head in their apartment in Haeundae District, Busan, leading to her death.

Ms. A's defense argued that she was in a state of diminished capacity due to schizophrenia at the time of the crime, seeking a not-guilty verdict. However, both the first instance court and the appellate court rejected this claim, acknowledging only a state of diminished responsibility rather than complete incapacitation.

The appellate court stated, "It is difficult to consider that Ms. A was in a state of complete incapacitation." The court further ruled that the original sentence of 10 years, along with a mandatory treatment order and five years of probation, was appropriate and commensurate with the defendant's culpability.
