South Korean Lawmaker Criticizes Party Colleague Over "Rebel Leader" Impeachment Stance

A senior lawmaker from the People Power Party has sharply criticized a fellow party member, accusing him of opposing the impeachment of a "rebel leader." The lawmaker, who is facing disciplinary action within the party, defended his stance, questioning the legitimacy of the proceedings against him.

He stated that his opposition stemmed from a matter of conscience and a desire to uphold constitutional order. The lawmaker cited objections from civic groups, including those related to the May 18th Gwangju Uprising, who argued that appointing someone associated with "rebellion" to a symbolic parliamentary position would be an insult to democracy.
