South Korean lawmaker urges 2.04-km extension of Goyang-Eunpyeong Line

“A distance of 2.04 kilometers may be no more than a hand’s breadth on a map, but the communities and daily lives connected by that distance are by no means small.”

Lim Yu-jin, a Democratic Party member of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council representing Goyang 1, used those words during a five-minute speech at the council’s third plenary session on Sept. 3. She called on Gyeonggi province to actively respond so the Siksa extension can be included in the Fifth Metropolitan Area Transportation Plan.

The Goyang-Eunpyeong Line is planned to connect Seoul’s Saejeol Station with Goyang City Hall via the Changneung district, covering about 15 kilometers. Lim’s proposal would add 2.04 kilometers from Goyang City Hall Station to Siksa-dong.

Lim argued that conditions in Siksa and Pung-dong have changed substantially since the government designated Goyang Changneung as a third-generation new town in 2019. She said rising transport demand in the two areas cannot be handled by roads and metropolitan buses alone, and called for the rail network to be expanded. Residents, she said, have waited seven years for a meal and for the extension, a phrase reflected in the headline’s reference to Siksa residents and their long wait.
