South Korean opposition leader calls for end to 'salmon party' propaganda after perjury conviction

A South Korean opposition leader has called for an end to political obsessions with legal cases after a former provincial official was convicted of perjury.

Jeong Jong-sik, the floor leader of the People Power Party, stated that the court's decision on June 19, which sentenced former Gyeonggi Province Vice Governor Lee Hwa-young to four months in prison for perjury related to the 'salmon drinking party' allegations, officially confirmed the ruling party's claims were false.

He added that this ruling undermines the Democratic Party's primary argument for dismissing the charges in the embezzlement trial of party leader Lee Jae-myung.

Jeong expressed gratitude to the jury and the court for revealing the truth. He also suggested that the 'salmon drinking party' allegations should be added to the Democratic Party's history of what he termed "false propaganda," which he said includes past controversies like the 'Kim Dae-up screen,' the 'mad cow disease scare,' the 'Cheonan sinking ghost story,' the 'THAAD ghost story,' and the 'Fukushima contaminated water ghost story.'
