South Korean Parliament to Hold Hearing on Football Association Amid Public Outcry

South Korea's National Assembly is set to scrutinize the nation's football governance, with the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee scheduling a hearing for July 22. The session will delve into recent controversies surrounding the Korea Football Association (KFA), including the national team's coaching selection process and overall operational practices.

Summoned as witnesses are prominent figures such as Chung Mong-gyu, the former KFA president, and Hong Myung-bo, a former national team coach. A total of 13 individuals have been designated as witnesses, reflecting the seriousness of the issues under review. Additionally, 10 individuals, including K-Football Innovation Committee co-chair Park Ji-sung and national team players Son Heung-min and Hwang Hee-chan, have been called as references.

Lee Jung-moon, a Democratic Party lawmaker and committee member, stated that public disappointment and concern over the KFA's recent affairs are significant. He emphasized the need for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to thoroughly investigate the causes of the problems and swiftly implement practical measures to prevent recurrence. Committee chair Lee Jae-jung highlighted that the hearing will examine various issues that have emerged in the national team's coaching appointment procedures and the KFA's overall operations, with the National Assembly taking stock of the situation.

The move comes amid widespread public dissatisfaction, with the committee aiming to restore trust and ensure accountability within the KFA. The hearing is expected to shed light on systemic problems and pave the way for necessary reforms in South Korean football administration.
