South Korean parliamentary committee passes bill to shorten Fast Track legislative period

A legislative amendment aimed at significantly shortening the review period for bills designated for expedited processing, known as the Fast Track system, has cleared the South Korean National Assembly's Steering Committee. The bill, driven primarily by the Democratic Party, proposes a drastic reduction in the time allocated for legislative deliberation.

The core of the amendment is to cut the maximum duration for Fast Track bills from the current 330 days down to just 90 days. This substantial compression of the timeline is intended to expedite the legislative process for crucial or contentious issues that require swift resolution.

Under the proposed changes, the time limit for review by standing committees within the National Assembly would be reduced to 60 days. Following this, the Legislation and Judiciary Committee's review, which typically focuses on systemic and textual consistency, would be limited to 30 days. This streamlined process aims to prevent legislative bottlenecks and ensure faster movement of bills through the parliamentary system.
