South Sumatra Police Arrest 17 Suspects in Forest Fire Cases

South Sumatra Police have arrested 17 suspects in connection with 15 forest and land fire cases reported in the region during 2026. The arrests are intended to serve as a deterrent and an educational measure to prevent future fires.

Based on the activities we have monitored, we are currently handling 15 Police Reports. During incidents in our jurisdiction, we have also detained 17 suspects. Hopefully, these actions will serve as a shock therapy and education for the public so that forest fires do not happen again in South Sumatra.

Police Chief Inspector General Sandi Nugroho stated that preparedness for these recurring annual fires began early in the year. He noted that the National Police Chief had visited in February to inspect readiness and hold a security rally.

Beyond legal action, prevention strategies include collaboration with the military, local government, and communities. Community members are encouraged to report any signs of fire to local police or officials. Police emphasize that while law enforcement is a final step, prevention is paramount, urging everyone to refrain from burning land for any reason.

Because these forest and land fires are a cycle that occurs every year, we have been preparing for this since the beginning of the year, Mr. President. In February, the National Police Chief even came to directly check our readiness and hold a security rally in South Sumatra.

The meeting in Palembang, attended by national ministers and security chiefs, focused on comprehensive strategies for tackling forest and land fires, highlighting the need for collective awareness and proactive measures.

Law enforcement is the last step; the most important is prevention. We urge all elements of society not to burn land for any reason, and to immediately report to the local Bhabinkamtibmas or Police Station if they see a fire hotspot.
