Southeast Asia faces a tense final round in the 2027 U20 Asian Cup qualifiers

No Southeast Asian team had officially secured a place at the 2027 U20 Asian Cup finals in China before the final round of qualifying. Vietnam face the most difficult position, sitting bottom of Group C without a point after two matches.

North Korea lead the group with six points, while Iran and Palestine have three each. North Korea need only a draw against Palestine to take first place and qualify. Vietnam can no longer finish first. Their only route is second place and a playoff spot, which would require a win over Iran by at least two goals and a North Korean victory over Palestine.

That combination would leave Vietnam, Palestine and Iran level on three points. Vietnam would then rank second on head-to-head results, provided they achieve the required margin. If Vietnam fail to beat Iran, their priority will be to secure the best possible result and avoid dropping further.

Thailand are the strongest Southeast Asian candidates. They lead Group H with six points and will qualify as group winners with a draw against Iraq. They could still be eliminated if Iraq win by at least two goals and Turkmenistan beat the United Arab Emirates. Turkmenistan lost 1-0 to Thailand but beat Iraq 2-1, a record that could become decisive if the teams finish level. Specialists consider that outcome unlikely.

Cambodia are the surprise package in Group G, sitting second with three points behind Japan’s six. Japan need only a draw with Yemen to qualify as group winners. Cambodia would finish second by beating Kuwait, or by drawing if Yemen fail to beat Japan, and would then have a strong chance of taking a playoff place. In the group containing Laos, Malaysia and Indonesia, Australia and Indonesia share the lead with four points, Malaysia have two and Laos have none.
