Southern Saskatchewan RCMP detachment ‘destroyed’ by fire, police say

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment in Morse, Saskatchewan, was completely destroyed by a fire on Sunday evening. Police reported that the building was unoccupied when the blaze broke out around 6 p.m., and fortunately, no injuries occurred.

Despite the loss of their facility, the Saskatchewan RCMP stated that policing services for the Town of Morse and the surrounding area will continue uninterrupted. Officers from the Swift Current Rural RCMP detachment will provide support. However, residents requiring in-detachment services, such as criminal record checks, will need to travel approximately 60 kilometers to Swift Current.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by fire investigators with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency. Police do not suspect foul play, indicating the fire is not considered suspicious. The Town of Morse expressed gratitude to the fire department and residents for their swift response.

During the firefighting efforts, the town experienced an unexpected challenge when one of its fire hydrants failed. This hydrant had been tested and confirmed operational in the spring but malfunctioned during the emergency, creating significant difficulties for firefighters. Insp. Jill McLaren of the Saskatchewan RCMP emphasized the commitment to community safety, stating, "We’ve lost the detachment but this does not change our commitment to keeping the communities in the detachment area safe."
