Southwest monsoon becomes active: heavy rains expected in several provinces

Sri Lanka's meteorological department has announced that the prevailing active southwest monsoon is set to intensify. Residents in the southwestern parts of the island can expect a significant increase in rainfall and wind conditions starting today and continuing for the next few days. This weather pattern is a key feature of the monsoon season in the region.

The forecast indicates intermittent rain and thunderstorms across the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North Western provinces. Additionally, the districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara are also expected to experience similar weather conditions, with overcast skies anticipated in these areas. The increased precipitation is a direct result of the monsoon's enhanced activity.

Authorities have issued a warning for potentially heavy rainfall, with some locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya districts likely to receive rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters. Meanwhile, isolated showers or thundershowers are predicted for the Ampara, Batticaloa, and Monaragala districts, primarily after 2:00 PM. The meteorological department advises residents in affected areas to stay informed and take necessary precautions.

Furthermore, moderate to strong winds are expected across the North Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, and North Western provinces. This combination of heavy rain and strong winds could lead to localized flooding or other weather-related disruptions. The public is urged to exercise caution, especially when traveling in areas prone to heavy rainfall and strong winds.
