Southwestern France: 20,000 Homes Without Power After Storms

Southwestern France is grappling with widespread power outages after severe thunderstorms swept through the region overnight. As of Saturday morning, approximately 20,000 households were still without electricity, according to energy provider Enedis.

Météo-France had issued yellow alerts for thunderstorms across 44 departments on Friday, with 47 departments remaining on alert Saturday. The storm activity was particularly intense in the south, with the Keraunos observatory recording 64,000 lightning strikes in the Southwest, including 7,800 direct lightning impacts. These strikes and downed power lines also sparked over 20 small fires in Dordogne and Gironde, which firefighters have since brought under control.
