SpaceX to invest $100 billion in new Louisiana rocket base, starting 2027

SpaceX has announced plans to construct a major new rocket launch base in southern Louisiana, committing an investment of $100 billion. The facility, to be named "Starbase, Louisiana," is scheduled to break ground in 2027, marking SpaceX's fourth spaceport.

The planned site, covering 125,000 acres in Vermilion Parish, is intended to expand Starship launch operations beyond Texas. SpaceX anticipates the base will support "thousands of Starship flight missions" each year. The announcement was made at a large event attended by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and other state officials.

Governor Landry hailed the agreement as a "turning point" for Louisiana, emphasizing its potential to generate employment opportunities for local families and stimulate community development, particularly in coastal areas. The project includes plans for a self-sufficient spaceport with integrated facilities for propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping, and rocket handling. A new airport may also be constructed.

This new base will complement SpaceX's existing launch sites in Florida, California, and Texas. The company projects that the Louisiana facility will create more than 3,000 jobs. However, SpaceX has faced opposition at other locations due to concerns over water resources, environmental pollution, and forced land sales. The company has also been expanding its presence in the southern U.S. with AI data centers and Starlink facilities.
