Spain advances confidently to World Cup 2026 round of 16 with 3-0 win over Austria

European champions Spain have advanced to the round of 16 in the 2026 World Cup, securing a comfortable 3-0 victory over Austria in Los Angeles. Despite a spirited start from the Austrian team, Spain ultimately asserted their dominance, particularly in the second half.

Mikel Oyarzabal was instrumental in Spain's win, scoring two goals and bringing his tournament tally to five. His first goal came in the 38th minute, assisted by Marc Cucurella. Pedro Porro scored Spain's second goal in the 66th minute, marking his first international goal in his 20th appearance. Oyarzabal sealed the victory with his second goal in the 89th minute.

The match, played in front of approximately 70,000 spectators at the SoFi Stadium, saw Spain's young star Lamine Yamal feature prominently. While Austria showed early promise, Spain's offensive power proved too much to handle.

Spain will now travel to Dallas, Texas, to face the winner of the upcoming match between Portugal and Croatia in the next round of the tournament.
